What Does Sustainable Swimwear Really Mean?

What Does Sustainable Swimwear Really Mean?

We see you out there making the switch to sustainable clothing, swapping fast fashion, and embracing a more conscious closet. Have you thought about switching to sustainable bikinis? We have 😉.  But what do "sustainable bikinis" really mean?

The Basics of Sustainable Swimwear

Sustainable swimwear can mean a multitude of things. Here’s what Swamis Swimwear prioritizes:

  • Smart Sourcing Materials: "Sustainable or "ethically made" swimsuits are often made with materials that are recycled, biodegradable, or produced in ways that minimize harm to the environment. Outside of the bikini itself, Swamis Swimwear uses recycled packaging and hangtags, and is 100% single-use plastic free.
  • Reduced Environmental Footprint: Swamis Swimwear champions ethical production practices, including low-waste manufacturing, or using fabrics that already exist (deadstock) for production. Specific digital printing practices also result in less dye and water waste.

  • Fair Wages:  Swamis Swimwear prioritizes ethical production practices and fair wages for our production team, plus clean and safe work environments.
  • Durability: Recycled polyester and nylon fabrics are just as durable if not longer-lasting than typical swimwear fabrics. High-quality sustainable fabrics should be UV, chlorine, oil and sunscreen resistant.

Sustainable Fabrics to Know

At Swamis Swimwear, we use a mix of recycled fibers, biodegradable materials and deadstock fabrics (aka remnant fabric that would otherwise go to waste) to create timeless suits that feel as good as they look. Read more about Swamis' promise to sustainability here.

Here are some of the top sustainable swim fabrics that Swamis Swimwear uses:

  • Biodegradable Swimwear Fabric: This fabric can dissolve in a landfill 10 times faster than a common synthetic fiber, and takes approximately 5 years. It will only biodegrade in landfill conditions (not in your bikini drawer)! Swamis Swim’s Nostalgia print is made of this high-tech fabric and is the softest we’ve ever worked with.
  • Econyl: Made from regenerated nylon waste like fishing nets, industrial plastic, and fabric scraps. It feels just like traditional nylon but has a far lower environmental impact.
  • Repreve: This innovative fiber is made from post-consumer plastic bottles, transforming trash into textile. Repreve helps divert plastic from landfills and oceans, all while reducing energy and water usage compared to virgin polyester.

Certifications and Standards to Look For

Look for third-party certifications that back up sustainability claims. Swamis Swimwear has both of these certifications for the majority of our recycled fabrics:

  • Global Recycled Standard (GRS): Ensures that materials are recycled and processed in an environmentally and socially responsible way.
  • OEKO-TEX Certified: Indicates the fabric is free from harmful chemicals and safe for your skin. Shop our new Verde and Haze smocked bikinis that are OEKO-TEX Certified!

Make the switch to sustainable swimwear, and join us in protecting the oceans we love to swim in. 🌊💚
